BATARI

Batari means «goddess» in Indonesian and represents a powerful woman from a lost tribe in New Guinea: the Asmats. Her hand-carved wooden drum transports us to a real incursion into the Neolithic period. The high feathers that adorn her emanate something supreme, sovereign from her. In reality, Asmat women don't really have an established place in the Asmat community, and I wanted to bring them to the fore.
